I’ve just done something I haven’t done for at least twenty years. I checked out The Official UK Top 40. The first amazing thing is that it still exists. And they still play it on Radio 1 at 4pm on Sunday afternoon. Bloody hell. Yugoslavia is no longer a country and there’s a black man in the White House, but they’re still playing the Top 40 on Sunday. You’d think things would have moved on since the end of the Cold War, but in the music world, apparently not.
The second amazing thing is that I recognise some of the names in there – The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beatles, Tori Amos, The Waterboys, Tony Bennet, Dolly Parton… What’s that all about?
Anyway, I was looking for Adele, to see if she really is famous, and it seems so. She’s @25 and 32 in the singles chart, and 2 and 10 in the album chart. If that’s the yardstick, she must be more famous than Beyoncé (who can only manage number 18, well below Tony Bennett @5) and I’ve heard of Beyoncé.
Song of the day
Seems like Adele has had more than one hit, and I like this one too. Set Fire to the Rain, by Adele.
