A Song a Day – Day 146

Grotte du Mas d'Azil

La Grotte du Mas d'Azil

Day five of holidays.

Today began and ended with yoga, but it was pretty much a rest day – no walking. The weather was cool and cloudy so I took the opportunity to visit the amazing Grotte du Mas d’Azil (the Mas d’Azil caves). The road, just 3 metres high at its lowest, goes through the caves. I’d driven along it on my way to the yoga place, and even in my ordinary car, I was wondering whether I’d hit the roof. The picture in no way does the amazing atmosphere justice.

You can just walk along the road and see the caves, but I wanted to take the guided tour. My word was it worth it. What you can see from the road is just a fraction of what the caves have to offer. They are Enormous and used to be home to  pre-historic man. Our guide was very passionate about her subject, and left us in no doubt that Captain Caveman is not a true representation of our pre-historic ancestors. The visit was only spoiled by an exhibition of modern art (the idea being to maintain a continuum of cave art which dates back 12,000 years) which was simply ugly.

I struggled to find a tune for today, but eventually came up with this one. I’m not sure our guide would approve, but then, maybe she would 🙂
